Contemporary manuscript dedicated to the glory and praise of God on each blank page (2 at front, 1 between 1st and 2nd part, 1 between 2nd and 3rd part, and 2 at rear). Decorative half-title and title pages. Illustrated royal patent printed at rear of title page. Decorative head, tailpieces, and initials. Fynes Moryson (1566-1630) was the third son of a famed Lincolnshire lawyer. To follow his father's profession, he went to Cambridge University to study Civil Law. As a way to improve his career opportunities, Fynes Moryson spent most of the last decade of the 16th century living and traveling in Europe, and visiting the Holy Land and Constantinople. In 1617, he published the first three volumes of his "Itinerary." This work was originally intended to consist of five volumes, but only three were published in the author's lifetime. Moryson's book is of great value to historians as it gives an accurate picture of the social conditions existing in the lands he visited. This work is complete with its 7 in-text maps of Venice, Naples, Rome, Genoa, Paris, Jerusalem, and Constantinople; its floor plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem; its full-page currency chart describing the English and Scottish coins; this "Itinerary" also contains numerous genealogy charts. Later binding (18th century) with slight fading and rubbing on spine. Previous owner's bookplate on inside of front cover. Minor offsetting on endpapers. The first 2 blank pages and half-title page repaired along edges. Title page foxed, trimmed, and mounted. Tiny chipping and minor creasing on lower margin of very first pages (not affecting text). Minor and sporadic foxing/age-toning throughout. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
