About this Item

FIVE PARTS IN ONE. 4to. 223, [9]; 136, [4]; 77, [7]; [viii], 59, [5]; 35, [5] pp. Printer's device on each title, elaborative head and tailpieces, many copperplate engravings or etchings (including 5 folding plates), indices; text-block split, edges of title browned and last leaf a bit frayed. Original double ruled calf with four raised bands, all edges red; rebacked in calf to style, new maroon morocco gilt-stamped spine label, original extremities worn. Very good copy. SPECTACULAR COPPER PLATES OF GLADIATORS & ROMAN AMPHITHEATERS, COINS - Early printings of five separate works by Lipsius. Contained are his works on instructions and depictions of gladiators, amphitheaters (fighting arenas, etc.), coins, historiography of ancient libraries, and the leading unfinished essay, a universal history. This universal history "concentrated on such non-political, non-chronological topics as finance, population, Roman architecture, and statuary." (Tournoy p.236). "Based primarily on the writings of classical Greek and Roman authors, it surveyed the libraries of antiquity by describing their locations, buildings, storage methods, and, to a small extent, their contents. Since it would become a prototype of general library histories for the next 250 years . . ." â" Walker. The author's De Vesta et Vestalibus Syntagma, on portraiture on coins, also contains the large (full-page) engraving of the Vestal Virgin statue (Lipsius, p. 59). The engraving was designed by Peeter de Jode, who worked periodically for Jan Moretus between 1608-1609. (p. 73). (Tournoy). See: Karen L.
