Fold-out facsimile of an 1853 broadside proclaiming the public exhibition of Murietta's head, the original (and possibly unique) copy of which was in the collection of Edwin Grabhorn. 8vo. 10-1/8" x 6-5/8" Americana Reprints [i.e., First Series of Rare Americana], No. 1. "The success of this First Series of Rare Americana was due to the selection of the first book, a very little-known pamphlet which had been given to Edwin Grabhorn by Francis Farquhar. The advance orders received . . . were so few (less than forty sets) that the Press decided to discontinue the series after the completion of the first book; and only four hundred copies were printed, of the five hundred that had been announced. However, soon after the appearance of the Murietta [sic] it went out of print, and the success of the remaining books in the series was assured" (Heller and Magee, p 96). Bump to head of rear board, else only modest shelfwear; light foxing/spotting to endpapers and few occasional margins; few small creases to broadside edges. VG.
