Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 220 pages. Published in 2015. The author's debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Marlon James' "John Crow's Devil". His hypnotic first novel. "Tells the story of a Biblical struggle in a remote Jamaican village in 1957, with language as taut as classic works by Cormac McCarthy and a richness reminiscent of early Toni Morrison" (Publisher's blurb). "A powerful first novel. Writing with assurance and control, James uses his small-town drama to suggest the larger anguish of a post-colonial society struggling for its own identity" (The New York Times). An absolute "must-have" title for Marlon James collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Marlon James. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Material of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First British Edition/First Printing still available online, is our last signed copy, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Both the First American and British Editions are softcover originals only. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the Booker Prize for "A Brief History of Seven Killings" in 2015. One of the most brilliant living novelists. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARLON JAMES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1780748493. Bookseller Inventory #

Synopsis: The incredible debut novel from 2015 Man Booker Prize winner Marlon James

"A powerful first novel . . . Writing with assurance and control, James uses his small-town drama to suggest the larger anguish of a postcolonial society struggling for its own identity."
-- New York Times Book Review (Editors' Choice)

"Elements coalesce in a Jamaican stew spicier than jerk chicken. First novelist James moves effortlessly between lyrical patois and trenchant observations . . . It's 150-proof literary rum guaranteed to intoxicate and enchant. Highly recommended."
