Book Description Little, Brown and Co., Boston, 1964. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Dust jacket complete, closed tears in a clear protective sleeve. Original cloth boards with fading to edges, slightly bowed, bright gilt to spine. No ownership marks. Colour illustrations. 129 pages clean and tight. JOHN F. KENNEDY: SCRIMSHAW COLLECTOR is an unusual book, one may even say an exotic one. It is about an art and a man, each well suited for the other and each possessing a spirit and courage seldom rivaled. Most Americans are generally aware of John F. Kennedy's attachment to things nautical - that from his childhood he was an adept sailor, that he was a naval hero during the Second World War, and that whenever he could get away from official Washington he sought refreshment and relaxation by the sea. What few people know or remember is that he was an avid collector of scrimshaw-the whaleman's art. Although it may come from the carving or etching on ivory, bone, shell or wood, scrimshaw has usually been those teeth or jawbones of the sperm whale that were "scrimshawed" by the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century whalemen. Created during the sailors' idle hours on long and lonely trips at sea, scrimshaw often depicted the interests of its maker - the hunt, the kill, foreign ships, sweethearts, and memories. John F. Kennedy's life was one that was well suited to the art of scrimshaw and its collecting. This masculine art is aptly associated with the brilliant and courageous Kennedy mind. The thirty-seven piece Kennedy collection was confined to pieces etched with portraits of naval heroes and American statesmen, sailing ships, whale hunting, national monuments and the like. One modern piece done by one of the few remaining scrimshaw artists was of the Presidential Seal. Intended as a present from Mrs. Kennedy for the Christmas of 1963, it was placed by the First Lady in the President's coffin the night before his funeral. JOHN F. KENNEDY: SCRIMSHAW COLLECTOR is devoted to a charming and rather primitive art that has remained a part of American life long after the whaling vessels have become debris on the ocean's floor. It was a part of the life of John F. Kennedy, the late President of the United States, and as such will never cease to be relevant to any American. Size: 4to. Bookseller Inventory # 141627
