Julius Lucius Brenchley (1816 - 1873) was a world-wide traveller and author from Maidstone, Kent. He visited United States, where he lived among indigenous people, Central and South America, North Africa, the Far East and Oceania. In 1865 he joined the Curacoa, a naval vessel then deployed to protect British interests in the Pacific including Solomon Islands, where Brenchley made a collection of more than 1,000 artefacts. He later published an account of the voyage: ‘Jottings During the Cruise of HMS 'Curacoa' Among the South Sea Islands in 1865’. Book Description Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1873. 3/4 leather. Condition: VG-NF. 1st edition. Thick 4to, tastefully re-bound in 3/4 tan morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, red & green morocco spine labels and gilt devices in compartments. Gilt rules on spine edges and corners. Essentially no wear. Very slight soiling to bds. Hinges tight. Marbled eps. Very mild spotty foxing, primarily to some page margins, also affecting the edges of some plates. Double fold chromolithographic frontis and one other chromo., 8 wood engravings, 36 in-text engravings, 50 beautiful colored full pg. engravings of birds, reptiles, fishes, shells, and insects. There is also a colored folding chart of the south sea islands. Chapter I misbound after Chapter II. pp. xxviii,487. Published posthumously, this volume is a marvellous repository of geographic, social, and scientific information about the archipelagoes of the western Pacific. The author was born in 1816 in Maidstone. Receiving an M.A. in 1843, he was ordained to a curacy in his home town. The Church, apparently, was not his greatest love. On the death of his father in 1847, Brenchley began the life of a traveller, never to return to Maidstone until shortly before his death in 1873, just a while before this volume was published. Brenchley was also the author, along with a French naturalist, Jules Remy, of a narrative of travels in the western US, entitled "A Journey to Great-Salt-Lake City," published in 1861 (see our listing.) This is a lovely, complete copy of the first edition. Seller Inventory # 1255
