Major Barbour was born in Henderson, Kentucky in 1813. He graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican War, as a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment. He died at the Battle of Monterrey. The editor was the granddaughter of Barbour's wife, Martha Isabella Hopkins, and John T. Bunch, whom she married after Barbour's death. Barbour's journal entries are from March to September, 1846, the day before his death and Mrs. Barbour's cover the period July through October. Seller Inventory # 11848
