RARE FIRST EDITION. "In the year 1841 an Expedition , consisting of three Steamers of the Royal Navy, was sent up the Niger by Her Majesty s Government." An intriguing work of early African travel presented in the form of two journals. Samuel Crowther became the first African bishop in the Anglican Church. The ordeal of his captivity by Moslem slave-traders and liberation by the Royal Navy is narrated here in an appendix. Schön was a German missionary and linguist who was active in Sierra Leone.
