About this Item

First Edition, stated. With a plate from a drawing by the Baroness Katharina Dombrowski and many black and white photographs by the author. 8vo, publisher's original ribbed blue cloth, the upper cover decoratively lettered in orange and with a large pictorial decoration of a jungle scene in black, the spine lettered in orange. The endpapers are pictorially decorated with drawings of jungle scenes by 'K.O.S.', who was the Baroness Dombrowski. These include an image of the chimpanzee "Johnny Boy" reading a book. xxiv, 286 pp. A very good, bright and pleasing copy, all quite fresh with just a bit of minor mellowing. FIRST EDITION. The author's examination of various superstitions, beliefs and practices of the Lala tribe in northern Rhodesia. It includes a great deal of information on witches and witch-doctors. There is also a very interesting account of a baby chimpanzee named Johnny Boy. Hoffman's first experience with the tribe came when he participated in a safari from Cairo to Cape Town completely on foot, a distance of slightly over 7,000 miles, ultimately taking 11 months to complete. This was the longest trek in the history of exploration. It was followed by a return trip to Rhodesia to collect more data for the book, and a film by the same name he produced for lecturing at the Explorers Club and for the National Geographic Society. The book follows the religious rites and customs of a single African tribe for a full year. It was during this period that the author was able to spend much time with the native population and study in depth their way of life and rituals, probably never before witnessed by a white man.
