Smith, Damon Runyon and Mrs. Jack Johnson. A tight, bright example, front gutter a bit darkened. The authobipography of one of the greatest heavyweight prizefighters of all time, Jack Johnson. Johnson (1878-1946), a native of Galveston, Texas, was the first African American world heavyweight champion, battinling during the bare-fist era, and despite his athletic fame (or perhaps because of it) was the subject of much racial discrimination; some mof his biggest fights took place outside the United States and in 1912 he was convicted of violating the Mann Act on very scanty evidence.
