About this Item

Portfolio consisting of 79 folio (17½" X 14") heavy stock photographs, "title page," 4 explanatory sheets, front portions of all 7 portfolio wrappers. Overall very good. Many photographic plates rate "Near fine," while some have varying degrees of minor edgewear, though in none of these is the image affected. Impressive portfolio of 79 (out of 80) large photographic plates taken by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), the pioneering geological survey photographer most noted for his images of the American West. The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a nationwide sensation that put Chicago on the map and attracted unheard-of numbers of visitors daily. As the heavy stock coated "title page" (headed "The White Flower of Perfect Architecture"), signed in print by Stanley Wood, proclaims, "Never, since the world began, had there arisen such a bewildering vision as that which made the name of the White City immortal. Never again will that miracle of loveliness be re-created. On the shores of Lake Michigan, in the heart of the most practical country on earth, bloomed the white flower of perfect architecture, and unto the eyes of all nations was opened the Book of Beauty, whose pages were illuminated by the passion flowers of Art." The 79 images are stunning and bright, each with a tan border and large margins. Every structure and monument is depicted from various angles in incredible detail. An accompanying "The Story of the White City" sheet and three "Historical and Descriptive" sheets (broken down into "Organization," "Principal Buildings," "Minor Structures," "Miscellaneous" and "Statistical") convey a vast amount of detail about the Exposition. The original seven heavy stock wrappers (each of which contained 12 prints, with the seventh containing 8 prints and the three "Historical and Descriptive" sheets noted above) were printed on brittle acidic stock that ages poorly; the main front portion of all seven wrappers (11½" X 15"), printed recto and verso, are present here. A superb first edition of the subscription set. Given the fragile nature of this portfolio, full sets in handsome condition such as this are quite scarce. DYBWAD AND BLISS 1627 note.
