About this Item

FOUR ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NARRATIVES 1744-1751. (Tucson): Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society, 1955. Octavo, cloth, in a dust wrapper. 82 pages, plus Index. Folding map. Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy in a LIMITED EDITION OF 600 COPIES. A fine copy, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. With original prospectus laid in. First Edition Father Jacobo Sedelmayr (1703-1779) was born in Bavaria and in 1722 entered the Society of Jesus. After his years of training, he made the difficult trip to Spain, then to Mexico, where he landed in 1736. He was sent very soon to the north, and we find him in Tubutama, in Pimeria Alta, in the same year. After Father Kino, he set up the finest record for exploring the north country and perhaps for missionary efficiency. He worked incessantly in Arizona and Sonora exploring and establishing missions until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. There followed the arduous exodus--traveling, waiting, traveling--many fell ill, some died. Sedelmayr and his group reached Vera Cruz in February of 1769 and Spain the following summer. He composed an elegy in Latin in memory of 20 of his fallen brethren. Although many of the Spanish Jesuits were arrested and shipped off to the Vatican, the Germans were allowed to return home. Sedelmayr, however, seems to have remained somehow in Spain. At least he died in Aldea de Avila at the age of 76. Bookseller Inventory # 703
