About this title

One of the most important works of 20th century Swiss architecture, the Freudenberg canton school, designed by Jacques Schader in the 1960s, resounds with visual power. Forging a meaningful link between educational postulates and architectural formulation, the school's physical and pediological structures are equally models of openness, transparency, and scope. This publication combines a DVD tour of the building's complex layout, conversations with the architect and other experts, and a book of structural plans and other informative documents.

About the Author:

Born in 1917 in Basel, Switzerland, Jacques Schader studied at the ETH-Z (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich) from 1939 to 1943 and founded his own architectural office in Zurich in 1946. Schader was the editor of the journal Bauen + Wohnen and Professor of Architecture at the ETH Zurich, but he retired from teaching to devote more time to practice. His built projects include the Aussersihl church hall, an office building for IBM, and the Langgrüt old people's home, all in Zurich.
