With frontispiece portrait of author. Original green cloth over beveled boards; front free end-paper detached. With inscription "Gift of Mrs. Selfridge, 3 June, 1926" on verso of title. An excellent copy. First edition. James Freeman Clarke (1810-88), was an influential Unitarian minister, social reformer, popular author, and scholar. He founded and ministered to a new kind of church and helped to expand the identity, scope, and influence of nineteenth-century Unitarianism. He was a pioneer in the field of comparative religion, as well as in educational reform. Clarke and Oliver Wendell Holmes were classmates at Harvard College. The present work is the transcript of the memorial celebration for Clarke's seventieth birthday given by his church.
