Vols. 2-6 have deaccession stamps on bookplates, spine of d/j of Vol. 1 sunned, jackets of Vols. 1-3 have edgewear at corners and spine ends, else a fine set. Complete sets are quite difficult to obtain. Volumes 2-6 have bookplates reading: "From the library of Lyman Henry Butterfield given to the Massachusetts Historical Society." Butterfield was a noted American historian, editor of the Adams Papers, director of the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, and associate editor of the Thomas Jefferson papers. Laid into Vol. One is the publisher's prospectus for that volume. Vol Two is signed by Butterfield on the front free endpaper and has his penciled annotations; laid in are 8pp. of Butterfield's manuscript notes on the volume, his review of the volume from the Saturday Review of 15 May 1948, and the publisher's review slip. Vol. Three has some pencil marginal annotations and three pages of penciled notes laid in. Vol. Four has 8pp. of penciled notes laid in, a typed letter from Lois V. Given, editor of The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, sending this work for review, Butterfield's 3pp. corrected carbon typescript of his review of this volume, and some marginal notations. Laid into Vol. Six is a review of the work by Wesley frank Craven from the New York Times Book Review of 11 November 1956.
