About this Item

4 volumes. Royal-8vo (24.8 x 16.5 cm). Contemporary quarter leather with marble boards. This is a French serial that was published over 4 years and bound in yearly volumes. There are 430 unsigned chromolithograph plates and many uncolored engraved text figures. Some of the plates are folding comprising two ordinary pages and given separate plate numbers. Internal condition is very good and generally free of foxing. Plates have floral parts preserved with gum Arabic coating and a tissue guard further protects each plate. Lemaire was a French botanist and professor of classical literature who also had an interest in cacti about which he wrote several small books. His main interest was in editing and overseeing production of very fine botanical prints. He worked in Belgium for several years as editor of several serial publications. His work on Le Jardin Fleuriste was his masterpiece, beautifully illustrated with fine lithographic color prints. Although Lemaire died in poverty in Paris, his writings and excellent botanical illustrations are a lasting tribute. (Nissen 2338 Sitwell p. 160 Stafleu & Cowan 4376). Bookseller Inventory # 0000221
