About this Item

Folio-14x10-hardcover in black/white illustrated paper-covered boards with 'matching' dust jacket (illustration depicts Newport Jazz Festival.) No edition or printing specified but likely first. Very Good+ in a VG+ DJ/: boards exhibit some minor bumping to spine ends and very light smudging to white/black boards from handling. Edgewear to DJ edge on top rear panel and one 1" closed tear to bottom left corner. Text itself clean, bright & unmarked. Introductory page in German. Unpaginated but 76pp. Caricatures of Jazz musicians in black and white from German artist Munzlinger. Not traditional portraits in any sense, but rather sketches that capture the musician's essence. Portraits depicted are Armstrong, Basie, Holiday, Goodman, Hampton, Young, Ellington, Kenton, Herman, Davis, Coleman, Mingus, Blakely, Brubeck, Modern Jazz Quartet, Mulligan and others-26 total. All portraits are full page on recto with verso blank with exception of some double-page scenes (Newport Festival, a jam session and others.) The artist drew these while on a visit to NYC, and the originals are displayed in that city's venerable Jazz club, the Blue Note. Altogether a fabulous book that uniquely captures the heart and soul of Jazz: As the FEP states: For Cats Only!(and we don't mean Fluffy) #50013. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-10213380420
