Book Description California Historical Society (printed by Lawton Kennedy), San Francisco, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Limited Edition. One of 530 copies, elephant folio size, 92 pp., with prospectus. Jedediah Smith (1799-1831) was the most widely traveled Western explorer and accomplished cartographer of his era. In this authoritative volume, presented by two noted historians of Western cartography, seven of Smith's maps are reproduced, his impact is discussed at length with the aid of a newly discovered map, his itineraries are reexamined, and his overall scientific contributions are for the first time considered. The newly discovered map was "fortunately uncovered in 1953 by Mr. Wheat in the collections of the American Geographical Society, in New York, [and] affords the closest and most comprehensive view of Jedidiah Smith's own map ever likely to be had, short of the discovery of the long-vanished original." (N.B., from prospectus.) Carl Wheat is likely best-known for his massive work "Mapping the Transmississippi West", which was published three years after this work, in 1957. This the "Special Publication Number 26" of the California Historical Society, beautifully printed by Lawton Kennedy.___DESCRIPTION: Original full red cloth stamped in gilt on backstrip, fore-edge uncut, seven fold-out maps (three larger maps are folded and slipped into a pocket at the rear); elephant folio size (17 3/8" by 11 1/8"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-86 pp., limited edition of 530 copies. Original prospectus loosely laid in, one large sheet folded to four pages, in black and red.___CONDITION: A near fine copy, internally bright and complete, text block is tight with solid hinges, the binding is clean other than a few, very light stray marks, the corners straight with a bare minimum of rubbing, all maps are fine and complete, the volume free of prior owner markings, the spine lightly sunned; the prospectus also near fine, clean with only the original fold, some very minor wear at the bottom margin including a short (about one-half inch) closed tear, not at all affecting text. Overall a near fine copy, particularly nice with the maps in fine condition and with the original prospectus, which seems uncommon.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
