About this Item

Quarto. (30)pp. First edition. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white. A Danish guide to the craft of printing with carved potatoes, which also includes examples of stories illustrated with potato prints. Instructions show how to carve the stamps and create characters, scenes, and action by combining and re-arranging basic geometric shapes. The stories are comic misadventures clearly intended to capture children's attention. In one, a boy and a rabbit outsmart a devilish troll, and in another, roving thieves meet their demise in various ways. The color illustrations show the full artistic potential of this humble medium; the final page is a Scandinavian landscape, in which three children hold the flags of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Slight toning to front cover, else fine in illustrated boards. Bookseller Inventory # 23677
