About this title
Boyds Mills Press publishes a wide range of high-quality fiction and nonfiction picture books, chapter books, novels, and nonfictionFrom School Library Journal:
reSchool-Grade 3-As Jemma and her African-American family enjoy pie and post-dinner conversation, Grandma shares a tragic story from her past. She tells of a horrific incident in Ocoee, FL, in 1920, when two African-American men tried to vote and violence erupted. Many of the disturbing details have stayed with her, "'Specially the dead man who was hanging from that tree. I'll never forget that." After a restless night spent tossing and turning, young Jemma decides to take action. She rides her bike into town, buys a small oak tree as a memorial to replace the felled hanging tree, and then takes a bus to the appropriate spot to plant it. Along the way, various people offer insight and analogies between the tree and life. Eventually a police officer, sent to capture the thought-to-be-runaway child, arrives to take her home. After she explains the purpose of her quest, he drives her to her destination and together they plant the little tree and leave a note to "Always remember to never forget." At times the language is forced, and the young protagonist sounds too mature for her age. Motivations are questionable; there is no reason for Jemma's family to suspect that she has run away, the policeman's initial treatment of her seems unnecessarily harsh, and readers don't know that her grandmother is dying until the child tells the policeman. Lopez's illustrations aptly capture the characters' expressions and emotions, but are static.
