About this Item

First edition, first issue binding ('Theodore Dreiser' on spine), 2nd state of the text with the error on p22:30 corrected. A tight copy, gilt lettering on front board is bright, slight darkening to the spine. Some small tape adhesion marks to the endpapers and a copuple light spots edges of the text block. A better than usual copy. Dreiser's classic novel of a destitute young woman who, working as a hotel maid, meets a Senator who becomes infatuated with her. She is impregnated but he dies before they can marry. She later finds work as a lady's maid in Cleveland, falls in love with the wealthy son but, due to society's disapprobation, they cannot marry. Basis for the 1933 film starring Sylvia Sydney, Mary Astor and Edward Arnold. Bookseller Inventory # 766
