Jews may have arrived in Lithuania as early as the 12th or 13th century and when granted privileges by the Lithuanian rulers in the 14th century, Jewish communities grew and flourished. The Jewish community in Vilna became one ot the most important communities in that part of Europe, possibly the world, with Hebrew and Yiddish language schools, yeshivot, learned societies, banks, daily newspapers, hospitals, publishing houses and various organizations.
