About this title

From the Author:

History says that Robert Ford killed Jesse James on April 3, 1882. His own son Jesse James Jr. wrote a book about his father, Jesse James: My Father, which he published in 1899. In his account Jesse Jr. asserts that his father was indeed killed by Robert Ford on April 3, 1882. Yet, all may not be as it seems!

History does say that relatives of Jesse James did not immediately seek Robert Ford. It does show, through documentation, that Frank James was cleared of all charges shortly after the killing of Jesse James. How is it that Frank James, known to have served directly with Jesse James throughout all his exploits, was quickly cleared of all charges shortly after the death of Jesse James?

Even today, several family members, who have kept hidden for many years information that would effectively rewrite the history books, still do not want the truth known. They want the information buried with them. They are the members of the first generation of Jameses. Members of subsequent generations-primarily the second and third-now believe that the public should know the truth, for better or worse, both the good and the bad about the notorious Jesse James. I am the grandson of Jesse James. The truth of my grandfather's real identity was even hidden from me for many years. I did not learn of my grandfather's true identity until 1976, when I was 38 years old. Even when I finally learned the truth and shared my knowledge with other family members, many still denied it.

It seems to me that there is a conspiracy developing to keep the truth from coming out about Jesse James. Why did it take so long for that last tooth to show up that came out compatible to known relatives? Did it have to be extracted from a known relative there was nothing in the grave at Kearney, Missouri, that would match to Robert Jackson? This conspiracy has been going on for over 100 years. I hope that someone can help me discover the truth.

Please contact me if you have any new information; my address is in the frontmatter to this book.

I have spent many years and a great deal of money to verify my grandfather's identity. I wanted to uncover the truth.

Much of the information in this book is the product of my research. Information, both good and bad, is knowledge and to know the truth of what really happened can, in some small ways, serve as a lesson to future generations. This is the true purpose of this book-to show the public what really happened to Jesse James, why it happened, and who really benefited from his exploits.

I still need all the help that I can get from people who know the truth. Now that all of his children have passed away, why can't these individuals come forward with what they know? It is now 1998, some 48 years after Jesse James passed away. Isn't it about time the world learned the truth?
