About this Item

Scarce, yet slightly incomplete, spectacular set of pochoir plates. The only other copy of this set of plates found at Pennsylvania State (by an OCLC search) and apparently not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (by check of its own catalogue). N.d., circa 1920. Oblong, 29 by 36.5 cm. Only eight of ten pochoir plates, plus decorated title. The plates depict card playing, bird shooting, fishing, dice, dancing, skating, archery and blind man's bluff, with all the elegant men and women of the eighteenth century Ancien Regime. The colors have a rich lushness characteristic of the best pochoir, and the figures are pared down and stylized yet also easily representational as in many of Arnoux's other book illusrations. Ex-lib light -- a small, neat inked number in a corner of the backs of the plates, not the least disconcerting, and no hint of ex-lib on the cover or the plate fronts. Light soiling to the cover. A few small tape repairs in the margins not coming close to the imagery. Bookseller Inventory # 003926

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
