About this title

Book by Coshnear, Daniel

From Booklist:

This collection of short stories, winner of the 2000 Willa Cather Fiction Prize, shows people having trouble dealing with work, illness, addiction, sex, relationships--life in general. In "New Job," a pet cat that is a woman's link to her late husband is put down. In "How We Remember You," a woman whose personality brightens up her group home for mentally ill homeless people commits suicide on her fortieth birthday, sending the counselor on duty into a tailspin. At another group home, a burned-out counselor approaches a breakthrough in "Double Shift." In "The Resolution of Nothing," a 10-year-old worries not only about getting too much help from his father on his prizewinning science project but about the nature of God; and Coshnear is on target in describing his young protagonist's environment: "One day you're a star, next day you're a turd--that's fifth grade, better behave yourself." With insight and incisive prose, Coshnear describes the human condition. Michele Leber
