About this title

Synopsis:

In search of his missing boot, Joe Giant meets Peter Peter and the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker before he discovers an old woman with too many children living in his boot.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Joe Giant and his Thumbelina-sized wife, Tilda, are new to Mothergooseville and can't wait to meet their neighbors. Joe gets his chance when he sets out to find his lost boot. He steps on Peter Peter's pumpkins; smashes the tub of the butcher, baker, and candlestick maker; and frightens the children of the old woman who has appropriated his missing boot to house her large family. Joe generously gives her the second boot, and she repays his kindness, allowing him to make amends with others and win friends. Joe is a Gulliver among the Lilliputians in Goffe's muted watercolors that fill in strong pen-and-ink outlines. Tilda is so much smaller than Joe that she needs ladders to bring him a cup of tea, and their interactions are sure to bring forth delighted chuckles. The endpapers feature detailed drawings of the town, with tiny recognizable figures drawn into the streets and doorways. Delightful drawings, however, cannot carry the weak characterizations and plot. The solution to Joe's problem of making friends is just too pat to be satisfying. --Ruth Semrau, Lovejoy School, Allen, TX
