About this Item

"The fugues and preludes in this volume belong to Bach's earlier Master-period. He has entered his inmdividual path, but in the form appears still dependent on German and Italian models. An exact dating of the sweveral pieces is impossible; but it may be assumed that they all originated during Bach's sojourn in Arnstadt, Muhlhausen and Weimer, that is to say, between the years 1704 and 1717. It is likely, however, that the period of their inception was much shorter, for the works belonging to the later years at Weimar {where Bach labored 1708-17} display a much greater maturity of form. We are probably safe in assuming that these numbers were all composed previous to the year 1714." This book has 31 pages and is profusely illustrated with musical scores. The text contains pencil notations throughout, in NO way effecting the readability of the text. Bookseller Inventory # 061142
