Three Original Art Works by Johannes Thiel: Original Self Portrait Etching 9"x6" Original pencil etching of trees, sun breaking through (beautiful) 7"x5" Original Watercolor Low Mountains, Water, 12 1/2" x 7 Johannes Thiel studied at the art acadamies of Munch and Stuttgart. After serious injury as a soldier in the First World War, he worked in Freiburg im Breisgau as an etcher, painter and book illustrator. A special noteriety Johnnes Thiel attained as an illustrator of bibliphile works as an etcher (illustrator to Moliere, Shakespeare, Cervantes, etc.), as well as author and illustrator of children's books in the publishers Herder and Kosel. Since the 1930s he lived in Kirchzartenin the black Forest. In his freelance work he devoted himself preferably to the watercolor and made a variety of commisioned works for the Herder Verlag. During the Second World War he worked as a war painter. After 1945 followed years of intensive work with numerous exhibitions throughout Germany. In 1960, Johannes Thiel was awarded the Hans Thoma Prize of the state of Baden Wurttemberg. Thiel died on July 31, 1962 in Freiburg He went his own way, far from the art business and prevailing styles.
