About this Item

John Brown's Body by Stephen Vincent Benet is a Limited Edition published by The Franklin Library, Franklin Center, Pennsylvania, in 1976. This 6" X 9 1/2", 38-year-old, 371-page(gold-edged all round) offering is an ex-library copy in VG+ condition. There are minimal/slight library markings observed, such as "Prospect Public Library, Prospect, Ohio", in small grey caps, stamped in two places, including once in the lower-right corner of the front loose end page, and "Cancelled-No Longer Property Of Marion Public Library(Ohio)", also in small grey caps, stamped in two places, including once in the lower-left corner of the back loose end page. The overall condition, physically, is, for the most part, Reader, like new. From Author's Note(dated April, 1928), "As this is a poem, not a history, it has seemed unnecessary to me to encumber it with notes, bibliography, and other historical apparatus. .In dealing with known events I have tried to cleave to historical fact where such fact was ascertainable. On the other hand, for certain thoughts and feelings attributed to historical characters, and for the interpretation of those characters in the poem, I alone must be held responsible." This is, then, Stephen Vincent Benet's iconic, signature literary achievement--the saga of John Brown's spirited, although ultimately quashed, mission to abolish the institution of slavery, and of the bloody Civil War that Brown's activities helped to spawn. Also included are a Contents Page. Throughout the narrative can be found some eight(8) full page, black and white sketches, admirably rendered by Peter Harritos, adding flavor and, at times, pathos to the long poem. John Brown's Body was one installment in The 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature, a limited edition collection published by the Franklin Mint Corporation under the auspices of The American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. There are no library markings on the boards, so the book will look absolutely great on the bookshelf! Thanks very much!!. Bookseller Inventory # 007317
