About this title

Synopsis:

John Burningham (b. 1936) is an English author and illustrator of children's books, especially picture books for young children. Burningham won the 1963 and 1970 Kate Greenaway Medals for British children's book illustration. The first was for his debut as illustrator (and author), Borka: The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers, named one of the top ten winning works for the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955-2005). His second Greenaway Medal winner, Mr. Gumpy's Outing (1970), is his work most widely held in World Catalog participating libraries, and it also won the annual Boston Globe-Horn Book Award (U.S.) in the picture books category. For his lasting contribution as a children's illustrator, Burningham was one of five finalists in 2012 and in 2014 for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest recognition available to creators of children's books. He was the U.K. national nominee in 1980 and 1986. Burningham has contributed to more than sixty other books including Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car by Ian Fleming. He has a house in the South of France and has captured the essence of France and England in his books. In this adult picture book. Burningham makes and selects images of the lifestyle of modern France with generous wit and satiric affection. "How can you expect any kind of agreement from Frenchmen in a country where there are 270 different kinds of cheese?" asks Charles de Gaulle. Pate de foie gras, an evenomh game of boules, the Moulin Rouge, the Cannes Film Festival, April in Paris, August anywhere else ..... in this brilliantly witty book, John Burningham celebrates the nation and culture that is France.

From the Inside Flap:

Pate' de foie gras, an evening game of boules, the Moulin Rouge, the Cannes Film Festival, April in Paris, August anywhere else...in this brilliantly witty book, John Burningham celebrates the nature and culture that is France. But Burningham also turns a sharp eye on other aspects of the country: the horrors of the autoroute, nosy old ladies behind every pair of shutters, the concierge who sees all and tells nothing...

John Burningham makes and selects images of the lifestyle of modern France with generous wit and satiric affection. "How can you expect any kind of agreement from Frenchmen in a country where there are 270 different kinds of cheese? asked Charles de Gaulle. But everyone will agree about this book: C'est magnifique!
