This account is taken from an unpublished manuscript in the Newberry Library, recounting the expedition of John D. Young and his party from Chicago to the Colorado gold fields in 1860, commencing just before Lincoln's nomination for the U.S. Presidency. Young was a loser at the gold rush game, and returned home just as the Civil War was impending. The Publisher's Preface discusses the selection o of the work and changes in the Lakeside Press operations. The Historical Introduction gives background on the gold rush and information about Young and his party. Includes a map, notes, index. illustrations. Navy blue cloth hard cover, gilt decoration on front cover, gilt titles on spine, top edges gilt, fine. One copy has a battered origial cellophane jacket; the second copy does not.
