First Edition (1890) Secured copyright in December of 1890; published first in 1891. Several illustrations in black and white of hunting and cabin scenes by Merrill, one of which has been inexpertly reglued. Inscribed presentation copy: "Presented James M. Piper with the author's acknowledgement of courtesies received. Very Cordially W.H.H. Murray Dec. 25 1890." VG in decorated brown cloth stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and the spine. The drawings of Norton's cabin and the pine trees with the brilliant burst of gold light behind them are bright, but the drawing of Norton inside the cabin appears rubbed. Spine gilt quite bright.
