About this Item

With an Introduction by Helen Farr Sloan. Illustrated with paintings, drawings, and photographs. New York (1965). Octavo, cloth, in a dust wrapper. Pp. xxvi, 658, indexed. A very good copy. FIRST EDITION. 'One of 'The Eight' -- a major group in the history of American painting -- John Sloan was also an illustrator and cartoonist for many important papers and magazines. Sloan kept an almost daily diary for eight years, for the most part to entertain his first wife, Dolly, and to make her feel cherished and important. Sloan's second wife and widow, Helen Farr Sloan, turned over the diaries, his letters, and letters written to him, as well as notes and drawings, to Bruce St. John of the Delaware Art Center, which houses the Sloan collection.'
