McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers, NC. When Virginia seceded in 1861, its western counties showed very little support for the Confederacy. Loyalist bands of partisans and guerillas drove most Southern sympathizers from the region. Most inconvenient for the Confederacy was the fact that these counties (which would later become West Virginia) housed the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which connected Washington with the Midwest’s wealth of manpower and supplies. This book covers the Confederacy’s 1863 attempt to invade West Virginia and destroy the critical B& O line. The book gives a detailed account of the Jones-Imboden Raid. Very good copy of the soft bound first edition. Not printed in hard back. 217 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 40926
