4to. vi, 265pp. Original blue cloth with gold lettering on cover. Includes errata page slipped in. French translation with Greek original and scholarly introduction and footnotes of Hellenistic Jewish work Joseph and Aseneth. This story fleshes out the biblical account of Joseph's marriage to an Egyptian woman. For post-Ezra Judaism this was a problem as it implied an acceptance of intermarriage. In rabbinic midrashic accounts Aseneth is transformed into the daughter of Dinah from her rape by Shechem, who was sent down to Egypt and identified by Joseph through a piece of jewelry she possessed. The Joseph and Aseneth story has Aseneth converting to belief in the God of Israel after fasting and throwing away her idols. It is possible that this work was authored by an early Christian. Text in Greek and French. Cover scratched. Taped on sticker on spine. Spine sunned. Overall in good condition. Bookseller Inventory #
