About this Item

232 pp. + 8 pp. publisherÕs catalogue, dated 1866. 12mo. One of ShawÕs classic works of typical American humor of the time. Shaw (1818Ð95) was among the most popular of American humorists and lecturers of the latter half of the 19th century, perhaps second only to Mark Twain. His folksy wisdom was very popular. Thrown out of Hamilton College after one year for stealing the clapper from the chapel bell, he went West on an unsuccessful expedition to the Rockies, became a farmer, coal miner, operator of a dilapidated steamboat auctioneer, etc. before beginning his career as a journalist in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1858. The author of humorous books and almanacs. he later lectured on the circuit. He died of a stroke while sunning himself on a hotel verandah in Monterey, California. Wear at ends of spine and corners. Fading of spine. Mild foxing. OwnerÕs stamp and signature on front pastedown. Else, Very good. BAL 17439. Wright II, 2195. Brown embossed publisherÕs cloth with gilt titling on spine.
