From Library Journal: Memoirs of the Gulf War and biographies of its players have begun appearing--why not a book of poetry? There are only a handful of recognizable names here: Allen Ginsberg, Lyn Lifshin, Julia Vinograd, and Neeli Cherkovski. John Penner's foreword tells us that the poets include "renowned artists, veterans, activists, a Vietnam widow, and a thirteen-year-old boy." As might be expected in an anthology that took eight weeks from conception to completion, the poems are erratic. Many are rhetorical; others are trivial; some contain amateurish, stilted diction. Most memorable are those in which poets juxtapose war coverage with the commonplace events of their lives (Dawn Alfred Viotto's "Lessons in War" or Joann Smith's "War at Home") or those where poets contrast childhood perceptions with adult reality (Charles Webb's "Without Being a Wimp" and Gwynne Garfinkle's "Beyond Vietnam"). Content merely to speak for themselves as mothers, fathers, or city dwellers, these writers turn everyday imagery into haunting symbols. For larger collections.
