About this Item

In honour of the 300th Anniversary of the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck in Table Bay, South Africa, the original journals of this Dutch colonizer were translated by W.P.L. Van Zyl. 3 Volumes, complete, Portrait frontispiece in each. [xlvi], 395, [2, map]; [xviii], 406; [xviii], 531 pp. Red cloth with gilt shield emblem in blind on front boards; somewhat faded gilt titles. All copies are clean, in tight binding, but the second has been bumped at the top edge of the spine, and all three show mild bumping at the top corners. These detractions are visible on some pages, though not affecting the text, nor the integrity of the binding. From the Introduction, (Vol. 1, p. xv): 'Almost a century ago - on 12 November 1853, to be exact - the Editor of the influential Cape newspaper, The South African Commercial Advertiser, drew the attention of his readers to the fascination and importance of the Journal of Jan van Riebeeck. It was a document, he stated, 'which would be as precious to the Cape Colonist as Doomsday Book is to the Englishman'." An important source of South African history. Shipping will be substantially surcharged given size and weight of these volumes. Size: quarto. Bookseller Inventory # 003383
