About this Item

[289] - 336, ads at rear, most of which are illustrated, printed wraps with black lettering, sunning at edges, front ads apparently removed, spine ends nicked, minor chipping noted at corners and bottom edges. This journal was the publication of the controversial, yet popular, Chicago - based, American Association of Orificial Surgeons, founded by the first author in 1887. Orificial surgery was a homeopathic approach to health and wellness that targeted the rectum and foreskin of both males and females as the focal points for disease generation and control. The Association was guided by the principle that any tightness or other disorder of the sphincters caused nervous irritation, and, thus, disease, and the cure was forcible dilation or amputation. Pratt presented his philosophy in an 1886 lecture that was published in the trade journal, The Medical Era, stating, "A vigorous sympathetic nervous system means health and long life. What surgical interest have we in this fact? It can be told in just one sentence. The weakness and the power of the sympathetic nerve lies at the orifices of the body. Surgery must keep these orifices properly smoothed and dilated." Within journal issues one could find case studies of circumcision as a treatment for headaches, curvature of the spine, hip joint disease, hydrocephaly, and the restoration of sanity in madmen, and surgery or dilation as a treatment for constipation, dysmenorrhea, eczema, insomnia, tuberculosis, and vomiting. By the early 1920s, orificial surgery was mostly a memory. The Journal was published monthly beginning with Volume I, No. 1, July, 1892, and ceased abruptly after volume IX, no. 12, June, 1901. The present issue includes Osteopathy, by Pratt, The Mosaic Rite Of Circumcision: A Plea For Its Performance During Childhood, by S. G. A. Brown, M. D., Puerperal Toxemia, by O. S. Runnels, M. D., Delayed Operation For Repair Of The Perineum During The Lying - in - Period, by Hudson D. Bishop, M. D., The Surgical Treatment Of Retroflection, by C. A. Hall, M. D., and Treatment Of Hemorrhoids, by C. A. Pauly, M. D. Worldcat / OCLC locates 11 holdings, one of which is microform. Very Scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 013139
