About this Item

cxxvii, 444 p. With 12 pp. of ads, the first 4 at the front and the rest at the rear. 4 folding color maps. 190 pages are Burton's contribution. Octavo. Bound in original blue cloth with lettering and RGS crest in gilt on spine. Condition: VERY GOOD+ Minor wear at joints and spine ends, with no loss, and the same at the corner tips, which are bumped, the bumping affecting the initial and terminal leaves at their bottom corners. Internally, the hinges are sound, the maps in FINE condition, and the text clean and bright. Bearing James William Bryan's regimental bookplate of the 22nd Regiment, Bombay Army. The 22nd played a pivotal role in British subjugation of the Indus Valley, when on Feb. 17, 1843, led by Sir Charles Napier, it engaged and decisively defeated the mirs of Sindh at Meeanee, a victory which led to Sindh's annexation by the East India Company. Burton was "surveying" in Sindh as a Captain in the Bombay Native Infantry from 1843 to 1848, but apparently did not participate in hostilities. His work "Scinde; or the Unhappy Valley", was published in 2 volumes in 1851. (Burton also spelled Sindh variously as Sind, Sinde and Scinde.) Penzer p 234. DIGITAL SCANS OF THIS WORK'S EXTERIOR, AND SAMPLES OF TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS, ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Bookseller Inventory # 13657

Shipping Terms:

Domestic shipping via Priority Mail costs $5.75 for the first book, and $5.75 for each additional book. For Media Mail shipments, the costs are $3.95 and $3.50 respectively. We routinely use Delivery Confirmation on our domestic shipments for items valued over $75.00, at no cost to our customers.

International "priority" shipping costs displayed on our Shipping matrix are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG, and fitting in an economy International Priority Mail envelope. Such will be shipped at a net "standard" cost of $24.95. If International First Class Mail offers a savings of $5.00 or more vs. Priority Mail, we will advise you before shipping and reduce your shipping charges accordingly. If your book(s) are unusually heavy, oversized, or valued over $400, we may contact you to let you know that extra shipping costs apply. WE WILL ALWAYS SEEK TO FIND THE LEAST EXPENSIVE SHIPPING METHOD AND TO PASS ANY SAVINGS ON TO YOU. Insurance is "your care". We strongly encourage international customers to purchase at least minimal insurance to allow tracking of books valued at more than $200. Generally that costs about $3.00. International orders paid for with a credit card will be shipped only to the card's billing address, unless prior arrangements are made. We strive to ship within two business days after receipt of a firm order placed on and accepted by ABEbooks.
