Phila.: Carey, Lea and Carey, 1829. 1st American ed. xxiv, [25]-422 pp. Plan frontis., folding map. 19th century full leather with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label and gilt spine rules. Some rubbing to extremties of binding, corners worn, small closed tear in map, bookplate of Farmers' Library, Londongrove, on front pastedown, signatures of two former owner's on front free endpaper, else a very good copy. An account of an attempt to find the source and direction of the Niger River in western Africa. Clapperton had taken part in an earlier expedition under the leadership of Maj. Dixon Dehham. In this journey, he traveled with his manservant, Richard Lander, who later solved the mystery of the Niger. Clapperton went to Bussa, to Kano and to Katunga and Sokoto, where he died of maleria and dysentery.
