About this Item

[And also containing the "Works" of John Woolman]. Philadelphia: T.E. Chapman, 1837. Octavo, full contemporary calf, with leather spine label and simple double-gilt fillet tooling across the spine in four bands. 396 pages. Some light intermittent foxing within and binding well-scuffed, but still a very good copy. A spiritual classic that is purely American, in spite of the fact that too few Americans even know of the book. It was first published in 1774, two years after Woolman's death in England. William Ellery Channing pronounced it beyond comparison the sweetest and purest autobiography in the language, and wished ".to see it placed within the reach of all classes of readers; it was not a light to be hidden under the bushel of a sect." This volume also contains Woolman's "Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes," "Considerations on Pure Wisdom and Human Policy," "Extracts, and Remarks on the Slave Trade.," and other shorter pieces. John Woolman (1720-1772) was born in New Jersey of Quaker parents, and from his youth was a zealous member of the Society of Friends. It was his agitation against the keeping of slaves that eventually caused the Quakers to abolish slavery entirely. Bookseller Inventory # 9302
