About this Item

The matched set of two volumes "good-plus ex-library," though the library markings are limited to manila cardholders glued to the rear free endpapers (cards present; these copies appear never to have been borrowed); small paper Dewey Decimal labels glued to spines (replacing earlier, larger, white numbers inked there, which have been blacked out); pencil notations to title pages, and college library rubber-stampings to title, "Contents," and final pages. NO edge stampings. (There are also no "Withdrawn" stamps. We thus contacted the college library in question, where librarians expressed no interest in getting back these volumes first acquired in 1948, and now presumably out of their hands for some 40 years, assuring us that if returned they would merely be donated to a thrift shop, at this point.) A pair of square, solid books in blue cloth, without jackets. Handsome map endpapers offer us Grasmere (1800-1802); The Lake District; Switzerland, and the scene of the tours in Scotland, 1803 and 1822 -- scenes of the author's tours and excursions, often in company with her brother William, the poet of some renown. These journals were not intended for wide publication, though they circulated in "fair copy" manuscript among friends (including S.T. Coleridge) through the 19th Century. The two volumes of 444 and 434 pp., with indices at rear of the second volume. Reduced from $45. Bookseller Inventory # 004120
