Two large quarto volumes bound in quarter linen over paper covered boards printed with partial map of the expedition, each volume housed in separate red slipcase. 547 pages. Edited by Nicholas Biddle. Introduction by John Bakeless. Illustrated with full page watercolors and vignette drawings by Carl Bodmer and other contemporary artists. Includes the large fold-out color map at the end of volume I. Sandglass from the Heritage Club laid-in. First edition thus. Full title reads: "The Journals of the Expedition Under the Command of Capts. Lewis and Clark to the Sources of the Missouri, Thence Across the Rocky Mountains and Down the River Columbia to the Pacific Ocean, Performed During the Years 1804-5-6 by Order of the Government of the United States." Linen spines toned darker from age and mild blemishes to spine on volume I. No previous ownership marks, no writing or book-plates, etc. Books are clean, square and unmarked. Boxes show incidental toning and some minor soiling, but are solid and intact with no splits or cracks. A very good set in very good slipcases.
