Book Description Mkuki Na Nyota Publishers, 2014. Taschenbuch. Book Condition: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Wie neu Leichte Lagerspuren - Joanna Skelt is currently the City of Birmingham Poet Laureate, UK. This collection presents poems around the theme of the central core of her worldview: the inter-connectedness of cultures and peoples. From the multicultural communities of Birmingham depicted with deep empathy, to her times spent in Africa, she reflects on the differences of peoples and sameness of the human experience; and on her perceptions of the beauties of place in all their myriad manifestations, as in the title poem: 'The great wheel turns into 2014, another archway and races on.Each new year we stop, link hands sweep the past aside as if it were easy to rejuvenate, rebuild, reinvent ourselves as if it were easy to forgive'. Addressing the challenges and realities of our world, she sees hope in the 'glorious and extraordinary merging and transcending of difference'. Joanna's work and readings reveal a passionate engagement with the world around her (and beyond) through its many levels and layers. It is perhaps not surprising that her own story, losses and loves have been deeply linked to this ongoing narrative. 74 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # INF1000908079

Book Description Grin Verlag Gmbh, 2014. Taschenbuch. Book Condition: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Wie neu leichte Lagerspuren - Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Literatur, Note: 1,3, Universität Mannheim (Anglistisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: -, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women. Superadded to the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and sufferings, and mortifications peculiarly their own (Jacobs 85). Harriet Ann Jacobs, author of the above quote, was an African-American slave and abolitionist, who published her slave narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl in 1861 16 years after Frederick Douglass highly successful, but male-centered autobiographical narrative thereby providing one of the first accounts of female slaves struggle for freedom and self-determination and the physical and sexual abuse they had to endure during slavery. While slavery was an extremely painful and dehumanizing experience for all slaves, it was, as depicted by Jacobs, in many ways even more difficult for females. Their sexual vulnerability rendered them easy prey to the exploitation and abuse of power both by their white masters and fellow male slaves. However, until the 1980s, this relevant aspect of African-American history had been largely neglected by historians and writers alike, even those of African-American heritage themselves. Yet, with the emergence of authors like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Maya Angelou, a new awareness has been created for the unique fate of black women in the pre- and post-Civil War period, and the impact that slavery had on their identity formation as well as their role in the African-American slave community. Toni Morrison, the first African-American to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, was in fact among the first writers to draw attention to the double marginalization of African-American women. Morrison s novel Beloved for instance, published in 1987, is based on the true story of Margaret Garner, a runaway slave who killed one of her own children to spare her a life in slavery. Beloved itself primarily explores the traumatic circumstances that led to the event, as well as the protagonists painful process of psychological recovery. This highly personal account of female slave experience allows us to examine the influence slavery had on African-American women and their families, and its impact on their relations to the black community. 44 pp. Deutsch. Book Description Authentic Lifestyle, 2004. Taschenbuch. Book Condition: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Gut - Variously described as 'gripping' and 'inspiring' this is a dramatic tale of pain and healing. As a young boy, Mark Edwards nearly ended his life after being abandoned by his parents and spending most of his early childhood in foster homes. The story tells of Marks journey into adolescence, the rebellion and escapades in the childrens home, his attempts to cut his wrists, and how he contemplated hurling himself under a train. His feelings of rejection led to an emotional breakdown resulting in psychiatric care. The faith and love shown by an elderly pastor set Mark on the road to recovery, and the reader sees the remarkable transformation from psychiatric patient to father, husband and priest. This is a book with great potential for ministering to people with dysfunctional backgrounds, those with a childrens home background, and those trying to lose unwanted memories. A dramatic moving story. Insight into understanding what it is like to be fostered. Talks of Gods healing power. 223 pp. Deutsch. Bookseller Inventory # INF3003346781
