About this Item

OLMSTED, Frederick Law. A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States, with Remarks on Their Economy. New York: Dix & Edwards 1856. 723 pp. Illus. Orig. blindstamped cloth. Recased, original cloth laid down, else a very good copy. HOWES O-78. "Olmstead was a sharp observer, and the book contains a great variety of detail pertaining to agricultural methods, the inefficiency of slave labor, the uncomfortable homes of the planters, soil exhaustion, the use of guano, rice culture, Dismal Swamp and other physical features, Creoles, and wildlife. The author discovered that the slaves in the seaboard states were generally well treated. They received enough food to keep them in good physical condition. However, Olmstead believed that the slaves were not as well fed as American free laborers, and he devoted considerable space to one of his favorite theories, namely, that slavery was a destroyer of self-respect and initiative." Clark. Travels in the Old South, 482. Bookseller Inventory # 56753
