A stunning pop-up Christmas card that opens to reveal a four-tiered nativity scene, in which seven angels surround the Christ Child. In the background, a snowy Christmas tree is decorated with red candles. The tree's snow covering and the angels' wings are heightened with glitter. Bright sprigs of holly accent the scene. Printed in ornate lettering on the front of the card is a Christmas greeting in verse, with a scrolling gilt, embossed border. In 1880, Raphael Tuck's son, Adolph, held a very successful nationwide competition for Christmas card designs, followed by an exhibition. According to Whitton, "Collectors and historians of the development of the Christmas card recognized that these two events organized by Adolph Tuck were a turning point in the progress of Christmas cards," after which they "became the accepted way of expressing sentiment and goodwill at Christmastime." Previous owner's inscription on the back; a few of the angels' wings and the top of the Christmas tree have been repaired, else a very nice survival.
