About this Item

"Critics have acknowledged 'Jude the Obscure' as one of the masterpieces of late Victorian literature and a story that offers a glimpse of the ensuing modern era, an age forced to reckon with the crumbling certainties of the past." (From a recent evaluation). First US illustrated edition, with 12 photo plates, including tissue-guarded frontispiece, and preface by Hardy dated August 1895. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1895. (No date on title page. "1895" listed on copyright page as date of copyright, but this first US edition was apparently published in 1896). Book Condition: Near Fine. Dark green cloth, bright gilt initials and flowery design at center on front board, with faded but entirely legible gilt on spine. Frontispiece illustration of woman and child with caption: "I ought not to be born, ought I?" Serialized in Harper's Magazine in November, 1894, but this is the first edition with the whole as originally written. Topstain slightly faded, two corners lightly bumped, but this is a very well preserved copy. Text block and pages firm. No marks but original owner's signature neatly (A. H. Symington) written in ink on first endpaper. A rare copy. Bookseller Inventory # 160409
