About this Item

New York: Judge Publishing Company, 1928. First Edition. The August 11, 1928 Issue. 11" x 8 1/2"; illustrated wraps, 32 pp. Brilliant cover, "Fit To Be Tied" by noted artist R.John Holmgren is one of the best ever; interior illustrations in B&W by a variety of artists -JamesTremGath, Dan Herold, G.B. Inwood and others- but also notable early ones by Dr. Seuss, who also has a very early short story in this issue. Reviews- "Judging" -of everything from shows to current news are the balance of this periodical; here, Pare Lorentz takes a look at several films. Remarkable condition for a Judge issue from the 20's. Faint soiling/toning, otherwise a bright, colorful near fine copy with the original subscriber's name on the back cover. See scans. Long-lived American weekly answer to London's "Punch" long-lived weekly magazine of humor & satire. By this time, very Deco in illustration. Humor in various forms from cartoonists and their strikingly artful offerings, also one-liner writers, byline pieces from Arthur Lippmann, Jack Shuttleworth, Pare Lorentz, Wilfred Funk, Hal Salisbury, editor S.J. Perelman, and others - including a "frothy novelette" (2 pages) by Dr. Seuss, "Sex and the Sea God", with two illustrations gracing that. The humor in Judge was generally unconcerned with contemporary P.C. type concerns. Original H.W. Hanemann song, "You Told Me", graces two pages at the center; a very early appearance of a "Scotch-o-Gram" game is on the inside cover. The artwork is quite Deco here, five years after the exposition which truly focused that art genre and eventually gave it its name. The quite literally stunning John Holmgren cover [see scan] - in which deco, flapper & color are blended in engaging superposition - carries the issue. American humor, laced with popular art. Handsomely preserved copy, which is itself something of a rarity for a weekly issue from the era, of a piece of America which is collectible in multiple ways. See scans. lg7.
