About this title

Synopsis:

Foss, Edward. The Judges of England; with Sketches of Their Lives, and Miscellaneous Notices Connected with the Courts of Westminster, from the Time of the Conquest. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1848-1864. Nine volumes. Reprinted 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. Hardcover. New. Authoritative biographies of chancellors, masters of the rolls, and judges of the courts are provided for each reign, from the time of the Norman Conquest through the reign of Queen Victoria, 1066-1864. The sequential nature of the set provides an accurate legal history of the courts. Based on original sources, it is an important reference work for legal historians. Considered "the standard authority" in its field according to J.C. Robertson in the Law Times of Sept. 24, 1870 (see Dictionary of National Biography VII:491-492), and frequently cited by Holdsworth in A History of English Law. Volume I covers the years 1066-1199 and the reigns of William I (12 judges), William II (5 judges), Henry I (21 judges), Stephen, (7 judges), Henry II (102 judges) and Richard I (69 judges). Volume II covers the years 1199-1272 and the reigns of John (72 judges) and Henry III (292 judges). Volume III covers the years 1272-1377 and the reigns of Edward I (116 judges), Edward II (72 judges) and Edward III (124 judges). Volume V covers the years 1485-1603 and the reigns of Henry VII (32 judges), Henry VIII (50 judges), Edward VI (17 judges), Mary (13 judges) and Elizabeth (48 judges). Volume VI covers the years 1603-1660 and the reigns of James I (33 judges), Charles I (47 judges) and the Interregnum (30 judges). Volume VII covers the years 1660-1714 and the reigns of Charles II (39 judges), James II (26 judges), William III (20 judges) and Anne (10 judges). Volume VIII covers the years 1714-1820 and the reigns of George I (17 judges), George II (18 judges) and George III (54 judges). Volume IX covers the years 1820-1864 and the reigns of George IV (14 judges), William IV (8 judges) and Victoria (60 judges). Volume IX concludes with an alphabetical list of all of the judges of England from 1066 to 1864. A total of 1,589 judges. Each volume indexed. Foss [1787-1870] was a founder and later president of the Incorporated Law Society. A prolific magazine contributor during his professional practice, upon retirement he dedicated himself to a study of the history of the legal profession, and lent various materials from his collection to Lord Campbell for Lives of the Chancellors. In 1843 he published The Grandeur of the Law and then went on to write this his nine volume master work, The Judges of England, published over a sixteen year period. "A" rated American Association of Law Schools, Law Books Recommended for Librarians.
